About us
About HeartChat
Everyone in Australia should be able to talk about their mental health in the language of their heart.
Almost half of the people in Australia have a parent born overseas. Many of us think, pray and feel in more than one language. Yet when we look for mental health support, it can be hard to find someone who speaks our language or understands our culture and faith.
HeartChat began in 2020 with support from the Victorian Multicultural Commission, as a place to find professionals who speak your language and understand your culture. In 2026 we rebuilt it from the ground up as a national directory with search by language, faith, culture and place, free guides in plain English, and a free list of services and helplines.
Who runs HeartChat
HeartChat is a project of AIDMH (Australians for Intersectionality and Diversity in Mental Health), the trading name of Mental Health of Australia Inc. AIDMH is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. It brings together community, practitioners, researchers and government so that no one works alone.
AIDMH also runs Dumplings Against Depression and the Solis network for multicultural mental health practitioners.
What we believe
- Language, culture and faith are strengths, not barriers.
- People should be able to choose who they see.
- Information about mental health care should be clear and checked.
- Listings should be honest, and people should be able to remove theirs at any time.
How HeartChat is funded
HeartChat is free for the public. Professionals pay a small yearly listing fee, which helps cover the cost of running the site. Donations to AIDMH help us reach more communities. AIDMH has Deductible Gift Recipient status, so donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
